A conversation with my creative friend author/editor Steven Price about my experiences in the hunting field with Denya Dee led to the creation of Covertside’s “Mac & DeDe” series. The idea was to teach youngsters coming to the sport a different hunting concept in each issue, hopefully in a light way. The cartoon shown here ran in the Fall 2008 issue.

HUNTING WITH THE CORNWALL HOUNDS

I had met Tony Leahy when he was a director of the MFHA and hunted with him several times when he was the designated huntsman for many of the fox-hound performance trials. While serving as a director, Tony implemented the innovative Professional Development Program for the MFHA, which enrolls a handful of selected young professional staff members each year into a structured program of education and mentoring.

Tony is a nephew of the legendary Willie Leahy, former Field Master of the County Galway—the Blazers—in Ireland. In addition to his devotion to foxhunting, he had an open jumping career in Ireland and England before coming to the States.

I love to hunt with Tony because, in addition to his obvious talents as a huntsman, he is probably one of the most beautiful riders you will ever see crossing the country. As he canters by, I imagine my legs to be a few inches longer, my heels a couple of inches lower, my back a tad straighter. I could ride like that, too, I dream.
